Creative Research Seventy Years Ago:A New Electronic Theory of Organic Reactions──Cherishing the Memory of Mr. Tseou Héou-Féo……QIAN Ren-yuan

【Abstract】 Mr. Tseou Héou-Féo, an organic chemist, performed many scientific researches of great originality with highly innovative ideas in the thirties of the last century. Unfortunately, owing to the war during 1937-1945 and his poor health in the postwar years he had worked only for a rather short span of less than ten years. His scientific contributions have almost been forgotten by present-day chemists in China. As a student taking a course of 'advanced organic chemistry' given by Prof. Tseou Héou-Féo in Zhejiang University back in 1937-1938, the author writes this paper with deep feeling to cherish the memory of a great scientist and teacher,on the occasion of the centennial annivarsary of his birthday. A biographic sketch of his academic life,mainly in regard to his scientific activities,is given in some detail. His electronic theory of organic reactions is briefly introduced, emphasizing his basic starting points as viewed from current scientific understandings. Sincere admiration of his scientific achievements and warm personality,as well as deep sympathy over misfortune in his later life, as expressed by a number of Chinese scientists,are also mentioned. The paper,the author hopes,would supplement the historical materials of chemistry in China.

An Unknown Phase of History Between Ye Qisun and Wang Ganchang and Its Enlightenment for Later Generations……YU Hao

【Abstract】 Wang Ganchang,a rare physicist adept in both experiment and theory,made outstanding contributions in science and education which is closely related to his being trained by Ye Qisun (1898-1998),a master of great learning and integrity. During 1930 to 1931,Wang and Ye studied exactly the same course in modern theoretical physics for one year in Germany,and this unknown historical fact is quite valuable for understanding Wang′s success in his career.The author provides relevant sources and gives his opinions.

Research on the Technology for Smelting and Founding Bronze in Ancient China……LIU En-yuan

【Abstract】 Based on historical documents,local chronicles and relevant recordings of the exploitation and smelting of copper mine,this paper makes a comprehensive analysis and study on bronze ware of the Shang-Zhou to the Qing-Han dynasties,which were unearthed over the years in Guizhou Province,as well as on founding moulds and sites of copper smelting.In addtition,it expatiates on the origin and development of culture and smelting technology of bronze in the Yelang area of ancient Guizhou with a discussion on the characteristics of bronze culture in this area.
