From May 8 to 9, 2026, the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (here in after referred to as “IHNS”) and the Institute of Science, Technology and Civilization, Jeonbuk National University (here in after referred to as “Jeonbuk National University”) successfully held the Second China–Korea Academic Conference on the History of Science and Technology at the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History in Seoul.

The conference was organized around three themes: “Knowledge and Practice in Motion,” “Tradition and Interpretation,” and “Human and Environment.” Professor KIM TaeHo of Jeonbuk National University chaired the conference, and 11 scholars from China and Korea delivered academic presentations on these three themes.

In the “Knowledge and Practice in Motion” session, four scholars gave presentations: GUAN Xiaowu of IHNS, LEE Youngju of Jeonbuk National University, LIU Jinyan of IHNS, and HA Jungok of the National Museum of Korean Contemporary History. Their presentations covered topics such as a comparative study of technology introduction and absorption in China and Korea from the 1950s to the 1990s, contraceptive practices among Korean women from the 1950s to the 1980s, the rise and internationalization of particle physics in China, and the development of conception technologies in the contraceptive era.

In the “Tradition and Interpretation” session, four scholars gave presentations: LI Liang of IHNS, JUN Yonghoon of the Korean Research Institute, WANG Haolin of IHNS, and JEON Jongwook of Jeonbuk National University. Their topics included the exchange and localization of Islamic astronomy in East Asia, the introduction of Western cosmology and the proposal of the Earth’s rotation theory in Joseon Korea, the driving forces behind the emergence and development of traditional Chinese architectural techniques, and the construction of medical thought on the Korean Peninsula—disease categories as cognitive units and their transformation into research data.

In the “Human and Environment” session, three scholars gave presentations: REN Xiaolin of IHNS, MOON Manyong of Jeonbuk National University, and HUANG Xing of IHNS. Their presentations focused on the vegetation and climate history of Shandong Province, China over the past 2,000 years, the social history of pollen allergy in Korea, and the research and conservation of the Jiudian Warring States period iron smelting site in Xiping, China.

The conference presentations spanned multiple fields in the history of science and technology in China and Korea from ancient times to the present, reflecting to some extent the current frontier concerns and future directions of research in the field in both countries. On the basis of the presentations, the participating scholars reached a consensus on further expanding the areas of cooperation and establishing a regular exchange visit mechanism. Both sides agreed that the Third Academic Conference will be held in Beijing in 2028, to be hosted by IHNS.
