The Research Series on New Perspectives in the History of Science and Technology (comprising 11 titles in 13 volumes), compiled under the auspices of the Institute for the History of Natural Sciences (IHNS), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), was published in its entirety by Shandong Science and Technology Press in December 2024, with the support of the National Publication Foundation Project.

The Series presents the outcome of Phase II of “Research on the Creation and Transmission of Scientific and Technological Knowledge,” a project under the Institute’s 13th Five-Year Plan. Building on the research objectives and approach of Phase I, it retains an international comparative perspective and brings together an interdisciplinary, cross-institutional research team to investigate the historical facts and mechanisms through which scientific and technological knowledge was created and transmitted from antiquity to modern times.

The Series encompasses physics, astronomy, navigation, botany, agronomy, medicine, and mining and metallurgy. It examines the substance of scientific and technological knowledge in these fields, its development and evolution across countries and regions of the world, and the interactions among these traditions. It also explores the relationship between scientific and technological knowledge and human society, giving due weight to Chinese experience and insights while drawing on international case studies and research on cross-cultural exchanges.

Combining micro-level empirical studies with macro-level synthesis, the Series delivers fresh insights through new perspectives. Through its studies of the history of science and technology in ancient, modern, and contemporary China and of scientific and technological exchanges between China and other countries, the Series illuminates the lessons that history holds for the present.
